Since I've started blogging and reading other blogs written by far more adventurous and cutting edge fashion guys than myself, I've been re-introduced to several really cool items that I grew up with but only assumed had fallen from the earth like so many other old school quality items. For instance, Walk-Over bucks, LL Bean Boots and now...the Boast polo shirt.
Most of you probably don't remember the brand but you might remember people walking around with a little marijuana leaf where an alligator or polo dude should reside. Well, let me just point out first that it's not a marijuana leaf...rather a simple maple leaf.
Started by Bill St. John of Greenwich, CT in 1973, the brand is pure Americana. Mostly seen amongst the elite tennis players of the time, notably Roscoe Tanner, the brand soon spread to the preppy east coast set and was worn by the Yale Squash Team, rock stars, upper crust society and was even sported by our Texan President George W. Bush. I remember seeing the brand on shirts and shorts while attending the Newk's Tennis Ranch near New Braunfels, Texas as a kid. Boast then started its hiatus in the early 80's and is now popping up again in blog posts and seen on edgy fashionistas who want to make a statement.
With a fairly limited offering, here is what you can find at http://www.boastusa.com/:
All the shirts come in assorted colors of each style.
Welcome back Boast! It's American and it's cool! If you want to make a splash next time you're on the tennis courts or by the pool at the country club, bring your best Boast shirt out for a trial. Remember, it's a maple leaf!
